Vera I. Ulrich

February 4, 1926 — May 25, 2019

Vera I. Ulrich (nee Tomsevics) passed away peacefully on May 25th, 2019 at Ascension St. Francis Hospital at the age of 93. Preceded in death by her husband Chris and stepchildren Chris Jr., Sylvia (DeLay), Robert, 3 sisters and 1 grandson. Loving grandmother of Debbie Miller (Bob), Cindy Sponder (Andy), Jeff Stotts (Andrea). Further survived by 4 other grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and other relatives and dear friends. Special thanks to brother Chris, sister-in-law Marlene and niece Linda for their loving care and support. Born 1926 in Kuldiga, Latvia and immigrated with her family to America in 1950 through the Lutheran World Federation’s sponsorship from Mary & Ewing Crow, farmers in Osborne, Kansas. After the family worked off the initial sponsorship for 2 years, she remained on the 2,400-acre farm to care from Mary Crow and eventually married her husband Chris and purchased the Crow ranch. Her summers were spent enjoying grandchildren and baking pies. After Chris’ death in 1995, Vera eventually moved to Greenfield to be near her brother Chris and family. She faithfully attended St Luke’s Lutheran Church of Greendale and devoted most of her waking moments working with the quilting mission. Together they created 200+ quilts annually to ship to third-world countries. Vera still loved to work outside in her yard, most known for daily picking her “handful of gold” which was the heads of all the dandelions in her yard. She enjoyed feeding the outdoor animals and you could frequently sneak up to find her sitting in a lawn chair with the bunnies and birds eating close by and listening to her comfort them. She also loved the annual event of making Palm Crosses for Palm Sunday. Even into her 90’s she still clearly remembered each fold but had difficulty holding it all together to finish tucking in the final end. Her ever-glowing contagious smile, unexpected silliness and warmth to everyone she met will be sadly missed! Memorial visitation at St Luke’s Lutheran Church (6705 Northway, Greendale, WI 53129) Saturday June 1, 2019 from 9:30 AM until 10:45 AM, with service at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers please make donations to St Luke's Church to support the quilters.
