Sam Hagedorn

July 25, 1952 — May 27, 2025

Sam Michael Hagedorn went home to his Savior on May 27, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, and unshakable joy. Born on July 25, 1952, and spending most of his 72 years in the Milwaukee area, Sam touched the world with kindness, friendly charm, and a gentle spirit. To the end, he was passionate and playful, combined with a dose of rabble-rousing fun that brought smiles to those around him.

Sam’s love for his family was profound, expressed through his steadfast prayers for his children and grandchildren, whom he lifted up by name every day. His unwavering devotion left a spiritual legacy that will endure. His mom (Mary) and dad (Samuel), who preceded him in death, taught him the primary importance of family. This was a lesson he never let go. Sam’s pride and joy were his children, Amy and Brian, and his grandchildren, Dominic, Dathan, Gabriel, Olivia, Anna, AJ, and Lily.

Sam’s loyalty to friends was equally steadfast; his playful grin lighting up even the darkest day. Sam found true pleasure in the simple things—whether sharing a goofy joke, trying something new, or offering a kind word to a stranger. Throughout his life, work, and hobbies, Sam collected friends along the way. Sam still kept in touch with friends from his school days. He was involved in a single parent Bible study that changed his life. From his work in the Christian music industry, to jobs at Something More Bookstore, Barnes and Noble, and Kwik Trip, and later his facebook and political friends—he always loved and cared for the people that came into his life.

A passionate sports enthusiast, Sam played football and baseball at Ripon College, where he graduated with a degree in Physical Education. He was an avid Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers fan, and he especially loved the thrill of fantasy football. Sam also had a passion for politics, engaging in lively discussions with his characteristic blend of conviction, kindness, and a touch of rascally humor.

More than anything, though, Jesus was the cornerstone of his existence. He was overwhelmed by the love of God—a theme he repeated over and over during his final days. And his faith was lived out not just in private devotion, but in a life that reflected what he believed. Sam was gentle, kind, patient, committed to the truth, loyal, and full of thanksgiving. This spirit of gratitude permeated his life. And in his final days, Sam expressed how thankful he was for the things that drove him throughout his life—his friends, his family, and his faith.

Whatever you called him—Sam, Sammy, Little Grandpa, Dad—if you knew him, you were blessed by him. Sam died in peace, telling loved ones that he was looking forward to seeing the face of Jesus, and offering the comforting words he repeated often, always sincerely, “I love you.”
