Milwaukee

Mannie Carter, affectionately known as Ray, passed away on August 9, 2024, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at the age of 71. Born on October 6, 1952, in Gulfport, Mississippi, he embraced life with an extraordinary spirit that touched everyone he encountered.

M had an undeniable gift for connection. He cherished the warmth of family gatherings during the holidays and relished the time spent catching up with loved ones over the phone, always eager to hear their voices. His laughter and joy were infectious, making him a beloved figure among family and friends alike.

A man of great personality, Mannie thrived in the company of others, but he also possessed a rare ability to find happiness in his own company. He was never one to require a crowd to revel in life's pleasures. His calm disposition made him a treasure to those fortunate enough to call him family or friend.

Mannie's passions were abundant, yet one stood out above the rest: sports. He was an enthusiastic fan, with a particular love for football. The New Orleans Saints held a special place in his heart, and he would passionately defend his team—just be sure not to call him during game time! His favorite pastime was watching games, as he found joy in the thrill and camaraderie that sports brought into his life.

Mannie is survived by his loving siblings: James Frank Hughes, France’s Jean Carter, and Charles and Chris Hughes. He is also survived by his cherished daughters: L’Tanya Carter, Tracy Carter, and N’kya (Justin) Beamon. Their presence in his life brought him immeasurable joy, and he will be dearly missed by them and all who knew him.

He was predeceased by his mother, Myrtis Hughes, and his brothers, Willie and Kenneth Hughes. Their memories will forever remain in the hearts of those he leaves behind.

Mannie's legacy of love, humor, and kindness will continue to shine brightly in the lives he touched. As we remember Ray, we celebrate the simple joys he shared with us and the indelible mark he left on the world. His spirit will forever be a guiding light for family and friends as they carry on his memory, cherishing the moments spent together.
