Lily Petra (Nielsen) Uhren
Peacefully entered into Eternal Life on Friday, August 28, 2020, at the age of 96. Preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd, in 2003. Loving mom of Jim (Rosemary Hare) and Bob (Gail Ostermann). Also preceded in death by her sister Marie Welch, and brothers Arnold Nielsen and Harold Nielsen. Survived by many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Born in the Redwood country in Fortuna, California, Lily worked in the family florist business. Her parents had immigrated from Denmark just a few years before her birth, and the first language she spoke was Danish. Lily is the niece of the noted Danish author Marcus Lauesen.
She met her husband, Lloyd, while attending St. Olaf College in Minnesota. They married in 1950 in California and then moved to Battle Lake, Minnesota, where Lloyd taught high school chemistry. They eventually settled in Brookfield, WI with the boys where Lloyd taught chemistry at Brookfield Central High School. They were long-time members of Calvary Lutheran Church, where they had many friends.
Lily’s first love was her family and her pets. She also loved traveling with her husband, was an avid gardener and a voracious reader … interests she maintained her entire lifetime. Whether in her Brookfield home or in her last years in senior living, she always had a bouquet of flowers on her dining room table in the winter and blooming flowers growing outside her windows during the warm months. Reading with her beloved cat, Robbie, by her side, both of them would keep an eye on the birds and squirrels.
Lily was much loved and will be greatly missed. A private family service is planned.
