Obituary

Hugo Antonio Caffa Igarzabal passed away on March 3, 2026, at the age of 71. He is survived by his wife, Meredith MacPherson Caffa; his daughter, Margaux Caffa (Reinaldo Cesco); grandchildren, Charles and Alexa Cesco; his mother, Justa Igarzabal; sister, Sandra Caffa; and dear friend, Elizabeth Henning. He was preceded in death by his father, his eldest sister, his mother-in-law and close friend Paula Higgins, and longtime friends William and Barbara Sellmann.

Born in Sarandí del Yí, Uruguay, Hugo was a man who prioritized adventure and his own brand of happiness. In the 1970s, he worked as a civilian electronics specialist in the Uruguayan Navy before deciding to see the places he had only read about in books. This led him on a journey along the Caribbean coast of Colombia and eventually to Caracas, Venezuela. In 1978, he moved to the United States, where he began a long career as a machinist at a tool and die company in Milwaukee. Hugo spent thirty years in Mequon and twenty more in Brown Deer with Meredith.

Hugo was a devoted father to his daughter, Margaux, and a proud grandfather to Charlie and Lexi. While he adored his grandkids, he was famously protective of his hat and glasses whenever they were within reach. He took great interest in Charlie’s soccer games and always appreciated the sharp, sarcastic wit Lexi brought to their conversations. When he wasn't at work, Hugo was a dedicated fan of Liverpool, the Uruguayan national team, and the Green Bay Packers. In his later years, he looked forward to annual fishing trips on Lake Michigan with Reinaldo and the kids.

Those who knew Hugo remember him as a kind, humble, charismatic man who enjoyed the simple things—a cold beer at a local spot, a good steak, and regular trips back to Uruguay to visit family. He lived by the philosophy of making the most of life until the very end, passing away surrounded by his loved ones. He will be remembered for his selflessness and his great sense of humor.

Private services will be held to honor his life.
