Cheryl L. Lerback

May 22, 1962 — January 24, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear sister and friend, Cheryl Lerback (62), after a valiant battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Preceded in death by her father, Norman Lerback, and nephew, Todd Vassar. Survived by her mother, Judy Lerback, and beloved sister, Dawn Cody. Proud aunt to Jason Beyer (Beth) and Erin Grim (Lewis). Cheryl is further survived by other relatives, friends, and her spoiled-rotten fur babies, Tuesday and Friday.

For over 42 years, Cheryl was an exceptional hairdresser. As owner of her own salon, she took immense pride in taking great care of her many clients, who ultimately became wonderful friends. Much more than a hairdresser, she listened to their stories, celebrated with them in their joys, and comforted them in times of sorrow. Together, they shared the ups and downs of their lives. When illness struck unexpectedly in July 2024 and Cheryl needed to retire abruptly, it was the loss of seeing her clients that was among the hardest parts of facing her illness. A special thank you to all those who kept in touch through cards, texts, visits, and phone calls.

Cheryl took incredible satisfaction in all her beautiful gardens. Her happy place was in her backyard—surrounded by an abundance of colorful blooms, immaculately groomed flower beds, and beautiful sculptures—it was here that she found joy and her sense of peace. Her yard and gardens were so exceptional, in fact, that she received the Mayor’s Landscape Award for her district in 2004.

When Cheryl wasn’t working at the salon or in her garden, she enjoyed working on many projects in her home. When asked how she became so “handy,” Cheryl smiled and said it was from always watching and ultimately helping her dad with so many things throughout the years. Cheryl was always curious about how things worked and had a thirst for learning about anything and everything she could.

While life’s journey inevitably takes its twists and turns, Cheryl was especially grateful for the close bond and renewed friendship she had with her sister, Dawn, over the last few years. A special thank you to Dawn for the care and attention that she provided to Cheryl—not only during these past six months—but most especially, during this final chapter of home hospice that enabled Cheryl the ability to stay in her home.

Anyone who knew Cheryl, knew that she was an avid dog lover. Over the years, she enjoyed the companionship of many rescue dogs and was a fierce advocate for local dog rescue organizations. Her final wish is that donations be made to Playing Again Sams – Wisconsin Samoyed Rescue: http://www.samoyed-rescue.com.

Cheryl would laugh that her life was “boring.” She explained: “My life may have been boring— and boring is okay. But. . . it was sprinkled with just enough Arbor Mist and cigarettes to keep it enjoyable.”

My goodness, Cheryl, your life was anything but boring! You gave so many people joy. You brought a zest and insatiable enthusiasm for life. You loved and are much loved. Your life mattered. . . and you made a difference! You were taken from this earth way too soon. Dear sister, daughter, aunt, and friend, you will be missed by so many people whose lives you touched.

Fair winds and following seas. . . Until we meet again.
