Chalit Phaphan, a beloved father and husband, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2024, in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, surrounded by his loving family. He was 79 years old.
Chalit was born in Northeastern Thailand on August 29, 1944, and grew up in a family that moved frequently due to his father's job as a railroad conductor. Chalit excelled academically and became a top scholar at Thammasat University, a pivotal moment in his life.
At Thammasat University, Chalit met his future wife Chueporn on the soccer field where he was a shy goalie and she was a popular cheerleader (you can say he scored). Chalit also formed a deep connection at Thammasat with a professor who recognized his future potential. This professor's belief in Chalit led to a life-changing opportunity: a ticket to the USA to pursue graduate studies. This journey marked the start of his international adventures.
Chalit's career began at Bangkok Bank and took him and his young family around the world, with work assignments in cities such as London, Osaka, and New York. He was highly regarded in the Thai banking community, not only for his expertise in trade finance, but also for his enthusiasm for the night life.
Chalit's legacy lives on through his loving wife, Chueporn; his daughters, Nancy and Mary; his grandchildren, Isabel and Brady; and his sons-in-law, Ben and John. They will remember him not only as a lifelong scholar, but also as a devout Buddhist who emphasized life's ever-changing nature, and as an enthusiastic foodie who relished exploring new restaurants.
While there will be no formal memorial service for Chalit Phaphan, we ask those who loved and cared about him to take a moment to remember him fondly. Carry his kind energy forward into the universe, as he would have wanted.
